If you watch lot of videos on YouTube from tech channels like MKBHD, LinusTech Tips and few others, you’re probably familiar with brand named RED who produce the cameras that record in 8K and easily cost $50000 and above. RED was founded by Jim Jannard former founder of Oakley, RED’s first prototype camera was showcased in early 2006, and as of now that’s July 2017, the company has just announced its first ever Smartphone.
The new phone is named as RED Hydrogen, although we don’t have much details on this but what we do know is that it will run on Android operating system on a 5.7 inch, although we don’t know the exact resolution quite yet, but it made it to headlines that RED is marketing it as a “professional hydrogen display”.
Red claims that the display on the Hydrogen can let you view 3D, VR, AR, MR and holographic RED Hydrogen 4-View (.H4V) content without the need of headsets of any other peripherals. We don’t know how exactly the above setup works but it’ll be extremely fascinating to see RED actually pull this off.
RED doesn’t just boast about the holographic display but it also states that it has implemented H3O algorithm to the Android OS that which will be able to take regular stereo sound and convert it into “multi-dimensional audio”. Red describes this as 5.1 surround audio for your headphones on the Hydrogen One Phone, it’s also supposed to work with .H4V content on the display.

The company has stated that it is also crafting the Hydrogen to work with modular components that will add additional functionality to the phone, which is something we have already seen with Moto Z Mods. RED has confirmed that the future mods will allow the hydrogen to higher quality pictures, Videos, and h4v content and currently there’s no word as to whether or not all future mods will be focused on camera-centric features.
Hydrogen also features the ability to use it as a monitor interface for the other RED cameras, USB Type-C, MicroSD card slot for storage expansion and finally the most important feature of 2017 a 3.5 mm headphone jack!
This makes it an very ambitious project, and given the company’s outstanding reputation in actual cameras this should be an awesome product release.
You can purchase the RED Hydrogen right now with an aluminium or titanium build for $1,195 or $1,595 respectively and is expected to somewhere in Q1 of 2018. Of course, its quite risky to buy the phone at this time as there’s not much known about the device at the movement.
